This 3D printer lays down melted plastic onto its build platform layer by layer to construct a 3D object. The shape of the object is determined by a design created in a CAD program, which is then converted in a 'slicer' software into a format understood by the machine. The Thing-o-matic was released with an 'automated build platform'. This build platform consists of a conveyor belt that wraps around the platform. This allowed users to program the printer to print multiple items without assistance.
It proved unreliable and was often replaced with a standard build platform as is the case with this model. This 3D printer uses the fused filament fabrication process. Marks Present. This kit was constructed by Sam Choy in After you have installed Sailfish, you can restart Conveyor if you wish. However, do not do so until you have completely finished installing and configuring Sailfish.
To stop Conveyor, first launch MakerWare if it is not already running. You do not need to use ReplicatorG as your slicer: you may continue using whatever slicer you prefer. You only need ReplicatorG to install or update Sailfish. On Windows systems, just unzip the ReplicatorG download and place the folder on your desktop. Then run the replicatorg. Figure 6.
You do need to be connected to the Internet in order for the download to succeed. At the melting point slightly above degrees Celcius, ABS turns into a half-solid, half-liquid ooze that is melty enough to extrude into the shape of your choice, while remaining solid enough to hold form long enough to cool back into a solid. Many different colors of ABS filament are available. These 1 lbs. And shipping is not free. Revisions 1, 2 and 3 of the solar cell bracket, from left to right.
Given the complexity of the machinery, you have a lot to consider before making the investment. Extremely cool. You will almost definitely be the only kid on the block with this toy. Makerbot maintains the Thingiverse : a user-driven database of open source 3D objects. Semi-automated batch jobs via the included Automated Build Platform.
All needed parts and come with the kit. BYO tools. Supplies such as ABS are also available from Makerbot. Four solar cell bracket are shown partially assembled into a larger structure.
Generally not robust enough to run unattended. Something, somewhere, is dying a horrible death and taking my whole operating system with it. Skeinforge—the software that converts your 3D models to tool paths—has an absolutely atrocious and ofter unstable user interface.
The machine can be somewhat loud and obvoxious. If you do this, you are making a very big time commitment. Questionable electronic sub-component failure rates, and one of my biggest complaints. The motor on my MK5 Plastruder was dead on arrival, and my power supply went out after less than a dozen prints.
Changed the Mac installer to address installation issues on some Snow Leopard machines. Users are warned if they attempt to save. Fixed dual extrusion long retract to reset the filament distance in order to reduce blobbing.
Adjusted the Skeinforge custom profile defaults to print better on MakerBots removed rafts and support as default during dual extrusion. Subscribe to Newsletter. Skip to main content Skip to footer Version 2. This latest version of our 3D printing preparation software includes support for the MakerBot Thing-O-Matic, our second generation 3D printer released in Now when you choose to use a raft, the MakerBot Slicing Engine will code the first layer of the raft to print much slower than the rest of the layers.
